Fabulous Fashion Guide for Pet Photography- 5 Suggestions on What to Wear to Feel Amazing

The time is drawing closer and closer – it’s almost time for your dog to get their photography taken 🙂 But wait! You’re worried about what to wear to the session – after all, you’ll also be in some of the pictures, won’t you?

Yes! Of course! Pet photographer’s love to showcase the relationship between the dog mom and her baby – so you will likely be in the photos too, but maybe not in the way you think!

Let’s go over some of the do’s and don’ts of what to wear for your pet photography session fashion:

Do – Dress for the Weather and Look and Feel Good in Your Clothes

First things first, you want to look nice for the photos! But you also want to be comfortable. So don’t go wearing super high heels if you’re not used to them, but also don’t feel like you need to dress up like a model either – remember your dog is the main subject!

So this means that for things like hair and makeup, you can dress it up like you normally would. The same goes for hair – although I recommend keeping it away from your face for any pictures. For men, I recommend shaving or at least trimming beards to look presentable – every stray hair will show up in high-quality photos!

Also remember to keep in mind the weather! Don’t come wearing a short dress when it is winter time and 30 degrees Fahrenheit outside!

I recommend bringing layers – especially in Colorado where the weather can go crazy and wild at any time. That way, if you get too hot you can take a layer off and if you start to get cold between photos, you can put on a jacket to stay warm. Things like belts, scarves, cardigans, or necklaces are nice touches.

Do Not – Wear Bright or Worn Out Colors

When you dress for a photography shoot, remember to not wear really bright colors – like neon green or bright pink. These do not show up well in photographs and will be distracting focus away from your dog to your super bright shirt. At the same point, you also don’t want to go to the opposite end of the spectrum and wear nothing back black – this also will not be flattering in pictures!

Remember: this is a fun time! Have fun with your clothing and let it speak to your personality.

Do – Wear Comfortable and Nice Shoes

Remember – most dogs are on the ground most of the time and as their photographers, we’ll likely be on the ground right alongside them.

If you’re taking pictures with your dogs, it is pretty likely you’re shoes will show up in some shots! Take care to wear comfortable shoes that will protect your feet from the elements, but don’t be afraid to bring a fun pair of colorful shoes as well! You can change them out for different looks.

Do Not – Wear Sunglasses, Hats, or Shirts with Distracting Logos

Remember – this a photoshoot. You may be a bit shy – but it’s OK! We want to see your wonderful smile and face. Do not cover it up with sunglasses and hats!

After all, the eyes are the gateway to the soul – and we won’t be able to connect with you if you cover them up!

Also, do not wear distractingly large logos on shirts or anything that will draw attention away from your pet and you. You may love Pepsi, but do yourself a favor and leave your Pepsi shirt at home!

A Final Word on What to Wear

When picking colors and trying to figure out how to coordinate, pick from a color palette of 2-3 colors that everyone can wear and try to pick colors that work well with your dog’s fur. Do not wear black with a black dog or all white with a white dog – mix it up!

All in all, just remember to have fun and enjoy yourself! Your pictures will turn out amazing and you will be so thankful you took those few extra minutes to pick out an outfit that looks great on you and really helps to compliment your dog’s natural beauty!
